The FLOSS-CD Project

The FLOSS-CD Project aims to be an introduction to Open Source for those that have not had the opportunity before. May people that are new to Open Source feel overwhelmed by the number of choices that are available because they have been denied the opportunity of chose for so long. It is with this in mind that a person new to Open Source dose not need to be overwhelmed by dozens of programs that do the same job in a different way, but merely to show them a select few that do the job well and inform them of their ability to research the others when they are ready.

If you would like to contribute to the FLOSS-CD effort there are several ways to do this.
  1. Subscribe to the email list servers
  2. Download the ISO file, create CD's of it and give them to other people

    Remastering your own CD's

Remastering a FLOSS CD or your own version of a FLOSS CD is very easy.

To get started here are the few things you need
  1. A bootable Knoppix or FLOSS CD
  2. A Pentium class computer with at least 200 M Hz CPU and 256 MB RAM
  3. A high-speed Internet connection
  4. Blank harddrive with a minimum 7 GB of space
  5. Floppy disk
  6. A LAN connection with a writable NFS server
Download a Knoppix CD from http://www.Knoppix.org.
Repartition your blank harddrive with three partitions
  1. Swap ( 1000 MB)
  2. Source (3000 MB)
  3. Master (3000 MB)

Do not have any other harddrives in this computer. The remaster process with completely erase any data in this computer.

Boot this computer with your Knoppix CD.
Open a sell program.
Get the FLOSS-CD remaster programs by running these commands at the command prompt.
su
cd
wget http://floss.SiliconTao.com/working/FlossRemaster.bsh -O FlossRemaster.bsh
chmod 755 FlossRemaster.bsh
./FlossRemaster.bsh

The program will ask you some questions and then begin creating a new ISO image file.
Configuration files are stored on the floppy to save you from having to answer some of the questions more then once.

To create you own custom CD change the contents of the OverWriteMaster and OverWriteSource directories on your NFS server.

If you create a cool CD and you want share it with the world please send us and email and let us know. floss@SiliconTao.com
